Health Matters

I ask that parents do not bring their child if he/she is sick. This applies to my staff as well.  We can only care for children with mild cold-like symptoms (clear runny nose, slight cough, and no fever). Per Health Department regulations, children will not be allowed to attend the daycare if they exhibit any of the following:

Symptoms of communicable disease (chickenpox, conjunctivitis, mumps, measles, influenza, strep throat, etc.); persistent diarrhea; persistent vomiting; fever; severe cough; yellow color to skin or eyes; pink eye;  skin or eye-lesions or rashes that are severe, weeping, or pus-filled; stiff neck and headache with any other symptom; difficult breathing or wheezing; complaints of severe pain.

PROCEDURE FOR DISPENSING MEDICINE to CHILDREN

Medication will be given to a child at a parent’s request under the following guidelines:  Parents complete a medication form indicating the time medication is to be given and the dosage required.  Staff will initial and record the dosage given upon administering the medication.

*Prescription medication must be in the original container and labeled with the child’s name, the name of the drug, dosage, directions for administering, the date and the physician’s name IT MUST BE STORED IN THE First aid backpack OR REFRIGERATOR.

If a child has mild cold symptoms that do not impair his /her function, the child may remain in daycare.

If a child becomes ill at Cindy’s Kids, parents will be contacted immediately, and sick children will be isolated and made comfortable. They should be picked up within 30 minutes. If not, the emergency contact person will be called. Parents who cannot be reached or do not pick up their sick child will receive one warning before care is terminated. Children may return when symptom-free or with medical approval. Please be mindful that bringing an ill child to daycare risks infecting others. It is your responsibility to care for your sick child.

Cindy’s Kids will report all communicable diseases, when required, to the local health department and to the parents of all enrolled children. Parents will be notified when their child has been exposed to an illness other than a communicable disease. For example, children with a mild cold or upper respiratory illness may still be cared for. However, children who are in the contagious stages of a communicable disease such as chicken pox, pink eye, strep throat, etc. will not be allowed in care until the appropriate period of communicability has passed. Superficial injuries will be washed with soap and water and covered with a bandage or treated with an ice pack. Parents will be informed about the minor injury when the child is picked up at the home or delivered to the parent or other authorized person. All injuries will be recorded in the medical logbook along with any medications given at the program. Head injuries or serious injuries possibly requiring medical attention shall be notified to parents immediately. These injuries are also reported to the Office of Child Care the same day. Parents will be asked to sign an Injury Report that will be provided to OCC. All staff have received training in first aid and CPR/AED from a state-approved trainer. Cindy’s Kids will follow standard emergency medical procedures for treating injuries. A head injury will be treated as a serious injury, and parents will be notified as soon as possible. All staff have a current certification in infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including training in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). If there is a need for emergency medical treatment, 911 will be called and the child will be taken to Salem Hospital at the discretion and direction of the ER services provider if being transported by ambulance. Should an ambulance be needed, parents will be responsible for any costs. Parents will be contacted as soon as possible after contacting 911. If possible, Cindy’s Kids will ask that your child be taken to the emergency medical facility that you designated on the child enrollment form. If ratios allow, one provider will accompany the child as capacity and ratios allow. Your child may need to proceed with an ambulance and its staff without a provider. All medication administered, accidents or injuries occurring during the time the child is in our care, marked changes in behavior or appearance, and any observation of injuries to a child's body received outside of our care will be entered into Cindy’s Kids' medical logbook. As licensed child care providers, we take the well-being and safety of your child very seriously.

Medications Cindy’s Kids WILL administer medications. Prescriptive and non-prescriptive medication will only be given to children if parents have completed the authorization form provided. All medicine must be in its original container bearing the label with the child's name, dosage and administration directions. Cindy’s Kids  will not exceed the age-related dosage on the label of any medication without a written doctor's authorization. Blanket authorizations, such as dispensing Tylenol “at my discretion,” are not allowed. Before applying sunscreen, diaper rash medications or insect repellant to a child, Cindy’s kids will obtain a written authorization from the child’s parent.
