Special Needs

Special Needs are Learning experiences at Cindy’s Kids

Deaf:  Learning to communicate with a deaf child was interesting and exciting.  Cindy’s Kids worked with the parents of deaf children and WESD for early intervention.   The WESD sent a teacher to daycare to help the other children in care learn to communicate.  My favorite story about caring for these children was when they would be at the top of the play structure and all the kids would YELL in sign language to tell me an airplane was in the sky.  The children used hearing aids and the Cochlear implant.

Sight:  We have had many children wear glasses to improve sight.  We have had several that needed surgery to correct vision.  We have helped with eye therapy and patching to correct this.

Autism: Early Behavior, cognitive, sensory, or speech interventions can help children with autism gain self-care, social, and communication skills.

ADHD:  ADHD Management usually involves some combination of counseling, lifestyle changes, and possible medications.  At Cindy’s Kids we work with the parents, doctors, and counselors to figure out the right plan of action for the individual child.

Type 1 Diabetes:  Requires a lot of close management of the Child's activity and food intake.  Counting crabs, measuring insulin, and giving injections need to be very precise. I go to the Diabetic pediatric team meeting quarterly.  At this time I work with a dietitian, nurse, endocrinologist, social worker, and parent.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis:  is a potentially life-threatening complication in patients with diabetes if insulin and blood sugars get out of range.

Occupational Therapy for Sensory Needs:  I have taken many hours of training through Salem Health.  Classes have been extremely helpful in challenging the needs of children and adults of all ages.

Nutrition Training at Salem Hospital: Individual training for the child's needs, allergies, or other health-related concerns is supported by Cindy’s Kids

Behavior:  I enjoy working with families as issues arise with their children. I have participated In Options Counseling in PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) for young children which emphasizes improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. In PCIT, parents/ caregivers are taught specific skills to establish a nurturing and secure relationship with the child while increasing their child’s prosocial behavior and decreasing negative behavior. As a daycare provider, I have the children for long parts of days.  It is important to work closely with parents and professionals to provide consistency. I have worked with the family mentoring at Connections 365 since 2015.

Oregon Foster Care

Cindy’s Kids has completed the required training to be a Foster care family for the state of Oregon.  At this time I have not continued to renew that license. . However we often have children who are actively in foster care.  We understand the many requirements connected with working with DHS.

Dyslexia

A specific learning disability that affects reading and related language-based processing skills. The severity can differ in each individual but can affect reading fluency; decoding, reading comprehension, recall, writing, spelling, and sometimes speech, and can exist along with other related disorders.   These children at daycare love to play games that allow them to think “outside of the box”.

Limited Mobility

At Cindy’s Kids we have been able to adjust to limited mobility and the special accommodations needed to safely enjoy the day by installing ramps to the building.

Inclusive Childcare of Oregon

Cindy’s Kids has a partnership with Inclusive Child Care to help provide the best quality care for children in need.  This organization helps families and providers find and use resources in Oregon.  Families must be on ERDC to qualify.
